Failed to connect

I'm trying to get onto the server, but the following error message keeps appearing:

Failed to connect to the server

Not authenticated with Minecraft.net

Please excuse me if the server is just down for a couple of minutes.  I'm not very tech-savvy.  

If that's not the issue, what do I need to do to alleviate it? 

Mind you, on the Play Multiplayer page, the ping comes in with 4/5 bars and says 36/200 people are online.

If you change your username then you have to go to your launcher and log out, then log back in and then you'd be able to get back in, however I'm not sure if this is the case.
