Cora’s eyes fluttered open as bright lights woke her from her magically induced sleep. Groggily looking around the room, she rubbed the sleep from her eyes. As she took in the black walls and ceiling, her memory kicked in with a jolt. Eyes flying open, Cora sat up straight, surprised to find herself lying on the carpeted floor without any restraints, considering the events leading to her waking up here.
Getting slowly to her feet, she patted the pockets of her robes- she had her wand, but why? And more importantly, why was she here, of all places? Taking her English Oak wand in her hand, she ran her fingers over the rigid tool nervously. Glancing over her shoulder, she noticed the door that, evidently, she had not seen before.
Slowly, Cora approached the door, hand tightening on the handle as she prepared herself to turn it. Just as she drew in a breath, ready to face whatever stood on the other side, a voice reached her ears- cold, harsh, almost snakelike. “That.. won’t be necessary.”
Cora froze, hand gripped tighter still on the cold, metal handle. She didn’t bother looking around the room for the source- it was a magically projected voice, not close enough to be a threat.. She hoped.
“You know.. I would have much rathered you didn’t try to escape.” The voice hissed, sounding eerily close to her ear. Cora shivered and whipped around the face the empty room. “I was hoping we could.. work something out. You help me, I return your freedom.. something along those lines.” Cora narrowed her eyes. She didn’t like this, not one bit. Swallowing, she tried to keep her voice steady.
“You attack me, knock me out, bring me to this empty and painfully boring room, and you expect me to help you? Ha, you’re funny.” She laughed sarcastically, glancing back at the door. Although her voice gave the impression of ignorance, mentally she was preparing to make a run for it.
Much to Cora’s surprise, the voice laughed- a high pitched, cruel laughter. Hardly what Cora would call amused. “Oh, no. I didn’t think you would.” After a pause, in which Cora raised an eyebrow, daring the voice to continue, it continued. “Oh trust me, we’ll get there. These things hardly ever start smoothly.”
“What things, may I ask?” Cora queried, taking another quick glance around the room, There was a small window placed near the ceiling on the far side of the room, far too small for Cora to fit through.
“Oh, a bit of this, a bit of that.” The echoing voice replied, well aware of Cora’s attempts to find a way out.
“Oh, do tell.” Cora challenged, thinking fast. Although the window was hardly 12” in height, a good, strong Bombarda could definitely give.. Whoever was holding her here a better view. The voice was silent for several long moments and Cora continued, speaking through her teeth. “Please, enlighten me.”
“If I did, I’d have to kill you.” The voice said, in a teasing way that Cora’s adoptive mother once had, when they discussed what Cora and her brother Katna were getting for Christmas. However, Cora knew there was a threat behind those words, once spoken so lightly to her.
“You know, that doesn’t really seem like too bad of an option, in the current situation.” She muttered to herself, not really intending for her captor to hear. But of course, but with a bit of what her friends called ‘Cora Brown luck’ and tempting Fate, the person behind the voice heard.
“That.. can be arranged.” Cora swore mentally, tightening her grip on her wand. She would have to run.
“You know, I don’t really like the work conditions here, and I get a very low salary.” She said, psyching herself up to make a charge at the window. “I think I’ll- quit!” Cora leapt forward, raising her wand to blast open the window- in the same instance, a cruel, green light blasted the small room, and Cora knew it was over.
As they say, all good things must come to a close.
She was dead before she hit the floor, falling on her stomach with her wand-arm outstretched, reaching out for the window that had once been her only hope. Her wand rolled from between her fingers, and slid silently onto the ground, the unicorn hair within becoming pale and decayed.
A cloak slid to the ground as another woman stepped from the shadows, staring down at the body. “You always were ignorant,” She commented to the body of her once-friend, before turning and leaving the room, without a second glance or thought.
That was the end, for Cora Brown.
Welp, haha, that was the end! I hope you enjoyed this 3 part.. thing. Yes, I did just kill off myself, no I am not changing my name. I just wanted to add a bit off.. backstory behind the whole Prawn Prion family name change, for me at least.
