today I did a hw thing for astronomy. it was a little short of 4 pages by about 20-25 words but I only needed 1 more point for 2nd year so I tried to do it fast. about 2 hours later I log on to see I have lost 10 points for so called "cheating". I asked the professor who graded my hw why I lost so many points. they said I had "cheated" for "copying word for word from Wikipedia". I admit that one or two of the sentences where not unlike the ones from Wikipedia but most of them where unlike the stuff one Wikipedia. also, taking away 10 points is more then a little harsh. this in my eyes was completely wrong and someone should do something about it.
Using someone else's ideas or words without sourcing and giving credit is plagiarism. You may not know this, but plagiarism is a serious academic offense and doing this irl can get you a score of 0 on an assignment in high school and can actually get you
expelled from college or university. In the workplace the penalties get even harsher. Maybe not ten points, but I agree some sort of penalty should occur for this, sorry. Let this be a valuable lesson, at least you learned it on here instead of the hard way irl where it matters.
